Read, Write Inc

We use Read, Write Inc to support our phonics and reading. Every child  assessed regularly and put into small focus groups based on their reading attainment.

Your child will learn to read in a very simple way.

They will learn to:

1. Read letters by their ‘sounds’

 2. Blend these sounds into words

3. Read the words in a story

4. Read at home

• Set 1 Speed Sounds: these are sounds written with one letter: m a s d t i n p g o c k u b f e l h r j v y w z x and sounds written with two letters (your child will call these ‘special friends’): sh th ch qu ng nk ck

• Words containing these sounds, by sound-blending, e.g. m–a–t mat, c–a–t cat, g–o–t got, f–i–sh fi sh, s–p–o–t spot, b–e–s–t best, s–p–l–a–sh splash .

After, they will learn to read:

Set 2 Speed Sounds: ay ee igh ow oo oo ar or air ir ou oy and words containing these sounds

Next, they will learn to read:

Set 3 Speed Sounds: ea oi a-e i-e o-e u-e aw are ur er ow ai oa ew ire ear ure and words containing these sounds

We look forward to sharing our new phonics scheme with you at our upcoming workshop. In the meantime please feel free to watch the following video to find out more:

The children are very excited to be using Read, Write, Inc to support their writing as well! In English the children are focusing on writing different types of sentences based on the books that we have been reading as part of our RWI sessions. The children are beginning to self- assess their work by ‘ticking and fixing’ using a green pen. We are very proud of how the children have hit the ground running!

This half term in English we will also be supporting our Read, Write, Inc session with learning around the topic of Africa. We are reading the book "Lila and the Secret of Rain."

The children in Year 2 who are not on the Read, Write, Inc programme will be joining Year 2 for their English session.

The children use ‘Fred Fingers’ to help identify which sounds are needed when writing new words. Please watch this video to find out more and how you can help your child at home:

In Maths this Spring half term, we will be focusing on multiplication and division. Children need to be working on being able to count in 2's,5's and 10's. Later on in the year, the children will have access to Timetables Rock Stars where they can practise timetables online. Their individual login can be found in their reading diaries.

In the second half of the Spring term we will be learning about fractions of numbers and shapes. You could practice finding a half and a quarter practically at home.

In the Sats there will be a mental arithmetic test which will test addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. To help your child understand you could play Maths Train at home

We will also be consolidating ur learning learning on place value so that the children have a firm grasp on tens and ones in 2 digit numbers.

In the Autumn term we will be looking at plants. We will be planting our own beanstalk and investigating the conditions they need to grow. We will also be looking at naming common garden plants. We will be making use of our forest school to identify trees. We will also be identifying and labelling the parts of a plant and a tree.

In the Spring term we will be looking at Animals including humans. As part of this new topic we will be labelling and identifying parts of our body. We will also be investigating our senses and saying which part of the body is related to each sense. We will be identifying and grouping common animals and looking at what they eat.

In the Summer term we will be looking at Everyday Materials. We will be looking at naming materials and discussing their properties. We will also be looking at the difference between an object and the material it is made from. We will be carrying out an investigation to test the properties of everyday materials.

Over the year we will be tracking seasonal change. We will do regular seasonal walks to see what changes have occurred in our forest school. We will also be looking at how the weather and daylight hours change throughout the year.

In the Spring term our Co-Jo champion is Simba (from the Lion King). We will be using Simba’s adventures to support our Geography and History learning. The children will be comparing life in England to life in Kenya. The children will also be comparing the Human and Physical features of Manchester and a Nairobi. We will be creating our own map of a game reserve and looking at the different animals you can find in Kenya. In DT we will be exploring African textiles and we will be creating our own African design.

This Spring term in R.E the Year 1 children will be exploring the Jewish faith. During this topic the children will be looking at symbols associated with the Jewish faith and the Jewish holy book. The children will also be learning about and labelling parts of a synagogue. They will also be studying Christianity and focusing on aspects of Easter.

This Spring term in R.E the Year 2 children will be learning about Christianity and it's leaders by visiting the local church. They will learn to recognise the features of a Church building and identify artefacts found. They will discover why they are important to Christians. They will research important events in the Christian calendar such as Easter.

PE Kit

Wednesday: Indoor Kit

Friday: Indoor/Outdoor Kit (weather dependant)

Your child will need an outdoor PE kit to include a jumper, jogging bottoms and trainers in addition to their normal PE kit. Please make sure these are named.

Please can we remind you that for all PE sessions long hair must always be tied back and all earrings MUST be removed or covered over with a plaster.

As we are a healthy school, we encourage all children to bring a named bottle into school filled with only with water.

In each class we have a ‘reading rainbow’. We expect the children to read daily; this will allow them to move up the rainbow. For every 20 times your child reads they will move up a reading rainbow star! On Fridays we will send home Maths homework.
