The Autumn Term:

Read, Write, Inc:

We use Read, Write Inc to support our phonics and reading. Every child is assessed regularly and put into small focus groups based on their reading attainment.

Your child will learn to read in a very simple way.

They will learn to:

1. Read letters by their ‘sounds’

 2. Blend these sounds into words

3. Blend these sounds into words.

3. Read the words in a story.

Your child maybe reading:

• Set 1 Speed Sounds: these are sounds written with one letter: m a s d t i n p g o c k u b f e l h r j v y w z x and sounds written with two letters (your child will call these ‘special friends’): sh th ch qu ng nk ck

• Words containing these sounds, by sound-blending, e.g. m–a–t mat, c–a–t cat, g–o–t got, f–i–sh fi sh, s–p–o–t spot, b–e–s–t best, s–p–l–a–sh splash .

After, they will learn to read:

Set 2 Speed Sounds: ay ee igh ow oo oo ar or air ir ou oy and words containing these sounds

Next, they will learn to read:

Set 3 Speed Sounds: ea oi a-e i-e o-e u-e aw are ur er ow ai oa ew ire ear ure and words containing these sounds

Please feel free to watch the following video to find out more:

During the Autumn term we are going to be focusing on Traditional Tales.  We will use our knowledge of these tales and our learnt RWI sounds to help us complete a series of different activities based around the book of the week.

These activities might be practical discussions like hot seating or role play and written activities like lists, wanted posters and story retelling.

When writing sentences, we will be encouraging the children to sound the words out, use finger spaces, capital letters and full stops.  This is a lot for them to remember and can take time to learn to do it properly.

Please support them at home where you can by encouraging them to sound things out, discuss punctuation in stories and read with them every night.

In the Spring term we will be basing our English around our COJO topic called 'Simba and Me'. Therefore the books we will be using are all linked to Africa. The main one is called 'One day on our planet' and is all about the Savanna.

We will use rhis book to write fact files, character descriptions, diaries and sentences using amazing adjectives.

Over the year the children will be focusing on recalling number facts to 10 (5+5=10, 7 +3 = 10, 2+8=10) quickly and accurately. The children are enjoying playing Hit the Button to test their recall skills. Please follow the link to play this fun game with your child at home:

In the Autumn term we will be looking at:

  • Number and place value within 10
  • Addition and Subtraction within 10
  • 2D shape

In the Spring term we will be looking at:

  • Number and place value to 20
  • Addition and subtraction to 20
  • Number and place value to 50
  • Measuring length and height
  • Measuring weight and volume

In the Summer term we will be looking at:

  • Multiplication and division (counting in 2’s,5’s and 10’s)
  • Fractions
  • Position and Direction
  • Place Value to 100
  • Money
  • Time

In the Autumn term we are looking at Materials and their properties.  The children will explore the different materials and where they might be found.  They will carry out experiments to identify the best material for a purpose and sort them accordingly.

In the Spring term we will be looking at Animals, including humans.  In this topic we will look at the lifecycle of an animal, body parts of an animal (and human), classify animals by name, number of legs etc. We will also look at the 5 senses in humans and how they work.

In or Cojo sessions, during the Autumn, we are focusing on our Traditional Tales Topic and linking it to Steve Backshall.  This encompasses History, Geography, Art, Computing and Design and Technology.  During this topic we will be looking at Castles and their locations as well as using water colours to paint them in Art.

We will carry out Cojo missions where we must complete tasks as a class.  The tasks will vary in the skills required but they will all include the Cojo principles of Teamwork, Resilience, Self-Worth etc.

In the Spring term we will be looking at Africa in our topic 'Simba and Me'.  The children will continue to develop their cross-curricular skills in History, Geography, Art and D&T through Africa.  We will learn where it it, what life is like, who lives there and the animals that roam amongst other things.

In RE during the Autumn term we will be looking at the story of Creation and how the world began.  This will lead us into the story of Adam and Eve.

We will also be looking at Celebrations and the birth of Jesus at Christmas.

In the Spring Term we will be looking at Judaism and how Jewish people live.  Then we will move onto Easter and how Christians celebrate it.

PE Kit

PE days are Tuesday's and Thursday's.  Please come to school wearing your PE kit on those days until further notice.

Please can we remind you that for all PE sessions long hair must always be tied back and all earrings MUST be removed or covered over with a plaster.

As we are a healthy school, we encourage all children to bring a named bottle into school filled with only with water.

In each class we have a ‘reading rainbow’. We expect the children to read daily; this will allow them to move up the rainbow. For every 15 times your child reads they will move up a reading rainbow star!

On Fridays we will send home Phonics homework.  We would like the books to be returned no later than the following Thursday so we have time to mark it and set the next one.

Maths Homework will be sent out in the coming week.
