Year 2 2019 - 2020

We would like to welcome you to Year 2

Miss Fisher, Miss Parr and Miss McNeil

Teaching Assistants:

Miss Hadzik and Mr Blakemore

For the Summer Term the children's English writing will continue to be centered on the book Jack and The Flum Flum Tree by Julia Donaldson. Next, the children will be researching animals and their habitats which is linked with the Science work. From this, the children will be writing non-chronological reports and riddles.

Also, during this term we will be writing stories linked to the author Eric Carle.

To improve the children's reading and comprehension skills it is important for the children to read every night. Please sign or make comments in your child’s Communication Diary, so that we can check how the children are reading at home. Children will receive an extra smiley for reading 5 times a week, this will give them a greater chance of gaining their Gold Award. It is important for the children to be asked questions about the text they are reading to help build their comprehension skills. The children also really enjoy listening to stories, so feel free to read other books together at home.

In Maths this term, we will be focusing on data, including pictograms and block graphs. Also, we will be looking at the properties of 3D shapes, different methods for subtracting 2 digit numbers and division. We will also be looking at 'real life' problems linked with subtraction and division.

Children need to continue working on being able to recall the multiplication and related division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. The children have access to Timetables Rock Stars where they can practise timetables online. Their individual login can be found in their reading diaries.

Our Science work will centre around learning about Living Things In Their Habitats. This will involve investigating the properties of living and non-living things. The children will be focusing on how animals have adapted to live in their specific habitat.

The Geography and History that we will be covering this term links with our work on Commando Joe's Pocahontas. The children will be learning about how Pocahontas links with our previous topic on The Great Fire Of London by creating a timeline. They will explore Native American life and discuss the meaning of the word 'Civilisation'. The children will create their own map, follow a map outside and learn to use a compass. In Design and Technology, the children will be designing and making a Native American dream catcher.

RE (Religious Education)

The children will be exloring the Bible and looking at Jewish and Christian stories.

The homework that the children are given relates to and embeds what they have been learning about in school.
