Year 2 2020 - 2021
We would like to welcome you to Year 2
Miss Parr, Miss Fisher and Miss McNeil
Mrs McCormick and Mrs Bennett
In the Autumn term we will be looking at the texts Grandad's Island and the Secrets of Black Rock. We will use these books to make predictions about what will happen next and look at emotions of the characters. We will be concentrating on forming sentences that are correct and include capital letters, full stops and adjectives frequently. We will concentrate on forming our letters correctly every time we write and share our ideas and opinions with others.
For the Spring Term the children's English writing will be centered on the book The River by Marc Martin. The children will be focusing on using conjunctions to join sentences together e.g. and, but,so, because. They will be expected to use Full Stops and Capital Letters consistently in a sentence. They will use adjectives to make their sentences more exciting. There is a focus on spelling and sounding out words correctly that needs to be applied in all their work.
In the Summer Term we will be looking at the text Pocohontas and use a variety of different writing styles to support this. We will look at the use of commas and possessive apostrophes as well as adverbs. We will continue to develop on comprehension and inference skills through a variety of different texts in class and during guided reading.
To improve the children's reading and comprehension skills it is important for the children to read every night. Please sign or make comments in your child’s Communication Diary, so that we can check how the children are reading at home. Children will receive an extra smilie for reading 5 times a week, this will give them a greater chance of attending the class end of term parties. It is important for the children to be asked questions about the text they are reading to help build their comprehension skills. The homework on a Friday will be a reading comprehension from previous Sats papers. The children also really enjoy listening to stories, so feel free to read other books together at home.
To help with spelling you could play Little Bird Spelling
In the Autumn Term we will be concentrating on place value and how many tens and ones there are in 2 digit numbers. We will then move onto addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers with words problems to go with them. We will show the children methods to solve these calculations and continue to practise our rote counting in 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We will finish off the term with data handling and interpreting information on graphs.
In the first half of the Spring Term, we will be focusing on multiplication and division. Children need to be working on being able to count in 2's,5's and 10's. Later on in the year, the children will have access to Timetables Rock Stars where they can practise timetables online. Their individual login can be found in their reading diaries.
In the second half of the Spring Term we will be learning about fractions of numbers and shapes. You could practice finding a half and a quarter practically at home.
In the Summer Term we will consolidate our knowledge of the 2’s, 5’s and 10 times tables. We will be able to use related division facts and calculate with numbers up to 100. We will work on telling the time in hours and minutes and be able to calculate change when working with money.
In the Sats there will be a mental arithmetic test which will test addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. To help your child understand you could play Maths Train at home https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/mental-maths-train
In the Autumn Term we will look at hygiene and how to keep clean. We will carry out some experiments with germs and potatoes as well as how to brush our teeth correctly each day. We will find out about food that is good for us and what else our body needs to stay healthy. We will explore what makes our hearts beat faster and how much sleep we sound get.
Our Science work, in the Spring, will centre around learning about Materials. This will involve investigating the properties of Materials and to compare them.
In the Summer Term we will find out about Living Things and their Habitats. We will plant bulbs and watch them grow as well as being able to name the parts of a plant. We will look at animal habitats and what they need to survive. We will use this information to explore food chains.
In the Autumn we will look at Queen Elizabeth 2 in History. We will explore her life, ask and answer questions about her and create a timeline to show when things happened. In Geography we will look at the United Kingdom and the four countries within it. We will find out facts about the countries using our research skills and what the capital cities are called. We will explore the major oceans of the world and record them onto a map.
The History that we will be covering in the Spring term links with our work on Commando Joe's Samuel Pepys. Samuel Pepys wrote a diary about the Great Fire of London. The children will be learning about the Great Fire of London and life in Britain has changed over her time. They will learn about houses in Tudor Britain. They will learn about fire fighting in the past. Once they have learnt about this they will visit Nantwich to learn about the Great Fire of Nantwich.
In Geography they will map Tudor London.
In the Summer Term we will use Pocohontas to help us with our Geography fieldwork skills. We will study our surroundings and local area which will help us create maps of these. We will look at globes, atlas' and World maps, plotting a variety of locations together.
In History we will look at who Captain John Smith was and why he is important to British History.
RE (Religious Education)
In Year 2, we continue our learning about Judaism. We look at the role of the Rabbi and start to explore the idea that a person’s beliefs can guide them in their life. We continue to develop our understanding of Christianity with topics on the concepts of Incarnation and Salvation and Resurrection. We explore the idea of a Christian Community by looking at the importance of the Bible and visiting a local church. We are then able to explore a multi faith topic focusing on stories that are found in both Christianity and Judaism. The children should begin to show curiosity and ask questions about these religions.
The homework that the children are given relates to and embeds what they have been learning about in school.
Throughout the year projects relating to work covered in class may be sent home.
The children will receive Maths homework on a Tuesday and it will need to be in by the following Monday.
The children will receive Spelling homework on a Friday and it will need to be in the following Friday.
