Year 2 2018 - 2019

We would like to welcome you to Year 2

Miss Fisher, Miss Parr and Miss McNeil

Teaching Assistants:

Miss Hadzik and Mr Blakemore

For the Spring term the children's English writing will be centred on the book The Diary of a Killer Cat by Anne Fine.

To improve the children's reading and comprehension skills it is important for the children to read every night. Please sign or make comments in your child’s Communication Diary, so that we can check how the children are reading at home. Children will receive an extra smiley for reading 5 times a week, this will give them a greater chance of gaining their Gold Award. It is important for the children to be asked questions about the text they are reading to help build their comprehension skills. The children also really enjoy listening to stories, so feel free to read other books together at home.

In Maths this half term, the children will be recognising, finding, naming and writing fractions 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a shape and a quantity. They will learn to recognise and use symbols of pounds (£) and pence (p) as well as combine amounts to make a particular value. The children will find different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money. They will solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of money.

Children need to continue working on being able to recall the multiplication and related division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. The children have access to Timetables Rock Stars where they can practise timetables online. Their individual login can be found in their reading diaries.

Our Science work will centre around learning about Everyday Materials and their Uses. This will involve investigating and comparing the properties of everyday materials.

The Geography and History that we will be covering this term links with our work on Commando Joe's Samuel Pepys and the Great Fire of London. The children will be learning about the Great Fire of Nantwich too. In Design Technology the children will be designing and making rafts to help people cross the River Thames and escape from the fire.  The children will be learning that there are 7 continents and 5 oceans in the world. The children are very excited about their forecoming trip to Nantwich!

RE (Religious Education)

The children will be investigating the features of a church building and they will have visited a local church by the end of this unit of learning. Also, the children will be looking at how Christians celebrate Easter.

The homework that the children are given relates to and embeds what they have been learning about in school.

Throughout the year projects relating to work covered in class may be sent home.

The children will receive Maths homework on a Monday and it will need to be in by the following Monday.
