Year 2 2019 - 2020

We would like to welcome you to Year 2

Mrs Hansen, Miss Parr and Miss McNeil

Teaching Assistants:

Mrs Maddock and Mr Blakemore

For the Autumn Term the children's English writing will be centered on the book Little Red by Bethan Woollvin. The children will be focusing on using Capital Letters and Full Stops consistently in a sentence. They will also begin to use adjectives to make their sentences more exciting.

To improve the children's reading and comprehension skills it is important for the children to read every night. Please sign or make comments in your child’s Communication Diary, so that we can check how the children are reading at home. Children will receive an extra smiley for reading 5 times a week, this will give them a greater chance of gaining their Gold Award. It is important for the children to be asked questions about the text they are reading to help build their comprehension skills. The children also really enjoy listening to stories, so feel free to read other books together at home.

In Maths this term, we will be focusing on place value, ordering numbers and addition and subtraction. To help your child understand you could play the game place value basketball at home.

Children need to be working on being able to count in 2's,5's and 10's. Later on in the year, the children will have access to Timetables Rock Stars where they can practise timetables online. Their individual login can be found in their reading diaries.

Our Science work will centre around learning about Keeping Healthy. This will involve investigating how germs are spread. The children will be focusing on the importance of sleep, a healthy diet and exercise.

The Geography and History that we will be covering this term links with our work on Commando Joe's The Queen. The children will be learning about the Queen's life and how Britain has changed over her lifetime. They will learn about the four countries that make up the United Kingdom. They will map the Geography of London in the United Kingdom and compare it to Sydney in the Commonwealth country of Australia. In Art, the children will be creating a picture of the Queen in the style of Andy Warhol.

RE (Religious Education)

The children will be exploring the Bible and looking at the Jewish and Christian faith.

The homework that the children are given relates to and embeds what they have been learning about in school.
