Forest Schools at Monks Coppenhall Academy is designed to be an innovative educational approach to outdoor play and learning.” The philosophy of Forest Schools is to encourage and inspire individuals of any age through positive outdoor experiences.
All children at the Academy are provided with the opportunity to spend time working in our Forest School environment with Mr Williams, our trained Forest School Leader, during the academic year. This can be through themed sessions linked with their Commando Joes Curriculum topic. These sessions help children to develop new skills and secure understanding in their curriculum topics. In these sessions, children have learnt how to safely light fires without the use of modern fire lighting equipment, carve wood using knives to create tools and how to cook basic food rations on an open fire.
Children are also invited out in small groups to work with Mr Williams on specific skills that will promote attitude to learning, trust and anger management. To do this, the children work on focussing their attention on completing challenges such as lighting fires, climbing trees, creating structures, working as a team and survival skills.
